l had been treated for mental illness (borderline personality disorder --- it is not as bad as it sounds, if you do not know what it is, then google it) about 4 years ago. l was on two medications; however, l have not been on them for 3 years now and l am doing fine. (yes, my doctors told me it was ok to go off of them and we did it gradually).

The question l have is l am in a completely different state now, with a different company and new insurance. l just chose my new doctor and l have an appointment with her next month (just a regular annual exam for my birth control) and l know that they ask for a medical history. My question is, should l disclose my old diagnosis or treatment or not. The reason l ask is because if l ever wanna be treated for it again, my insurance will not cover it if it is a pre-existing condition. l figure if l do not put it down now, and down the line if l ever have any issues l could always go to the doctor and have them re-diagnose me.

My concern is not about the ethics of doing this (as l do not feel insurance companies are very ethical) my question is, 1 will that work and 2 do you think that my doctor, not having all of the facts will still be able to treat me for things like getting my birth control and ear infections and stuff? I am not allergic to any medications, and I am not currently taking any, so l do not think omitting this info could hurt me.

l believe the rule is that if you have not been treated for a preexisting condition within the past year, it is covered.

Yes. First, most insurance companies will pay for any condition u have IF ur old insurance coverage never lapsed. If u had a lapse in coverage (no insurance for a while) they wo not pay to treat an old condition for the first 6-12 months or so that u r on their new plan. You had this condition over 3 years ago, so it wo not come into play.

Second, l would recommend u tell ur doctor. If u want to, do not write it on ur forms but tell her verbally (out loud) when u meet w/ her. My reason for saying so is that birth control pills r hormones & those can affect ur moods, esp in people that have a history mental illness. By letting ur doctor know about it, they can pick a medicine that is less likely to cause that to happen again for you. And statistics say 1/3 of the adult population is on some kind of medication for mental illness, so it is not going to come as a shock to her.
