yes it is! dont worry though! this happened to me last month and im 16 and l was petrified! just get a pad on and youll be fine, its your first one so it will last 7 or more days okay :) hope l help you, youll be ok x

yeah, that definitely sounds like your period. And if your wondering why its brown its just because that blood didnt have any oxygen in it. Normally when girls are spotting its brown, or towards the end of their period its brown because its the oldest blood with no oxygen.
